About Cedar City

Cedar city can be found near the southwest corner of the state of Utah.  This Iron County city is located 250 miles south of Salt Lake City and is north of Las Vegas (180 miles).  Highway travelers heading north or south via Interstate 15 will find La Quinta Inn & Suites Cedar City a convenient stopping place since the highway runs through the center of the city.

Cedar City has a long history with evidence of pre-historic people dating back to A.D.  1000 and 1300.  Ancestors of the Paiute Indians began their stint in the area in 1776 after joining up with the Dominguez-Escalante Expedition – a mission to find a land route from Santa Fe, New Mexico to Monterey where Catholic missions were completed.

Mormon Pioneers first occupied the Cedar City area in 1851 after being sent from Parowan, UT to build an iron works.  The town was named after the abundance of Juniper trees that were thought to be cedar.  The site of the town was an equal distance (10 miles both ways) from the areas rich iron deposits and coal resources; making it regionally convenient.  A few years later, at the suggestion of Brigham Young – leader and president of the Church of Jesus Christ of ladder-day Saints, the site was moved to a more convenient location; closer to the iron works and out of flood territory.

Young played a major role in the early development of Utah and other territories.  He was the first governor during which time he directed the establishments of settlements throughout Utah, Idaho, Arizona, Nevada, California, and portions of Colorado and Mexico.  Young orchestrated the first mail service, numerous temples, also involved in the establishment of a university that would go on to become the University of Utah.
